Fog 05:15
Love appeared just like a fog Sometimes I try to recall The feeling that I could fall All at once, I see I’m alone, I’m free Who knew that I’d miss the mess? The mist must have evanesced But oh! That distant calling That yearning to yen That longing to lean in Someone to call my own It’s now returning And how bizarre now that it’s for someone new For someone who really seems to be the one, someone to Somehow remind me of you Pitter patter pitter patter Rain on my window My world was very small when I had you What’s the matter? What’s the matter? Tears on my pillow Why would I be surprised he tells me pretty lies? I tried to find a man who’s just like you Heartaches like these are trite and true He’s just like you He comes and goes He never knows He’s in mid-air He doesn’t care What subterfuge, what ruse To hold him and keep him Beseeching But why try to catch a fog disappearing into sky?

Growlin' Dan 04:34
Gather ‘round, folks, while I tell you ‘bout my man I’m talkin’ ‘bout Growlin’ Dan He’s got roly-poly eyes And he’s just about my size He ain’t no sheik nor a gigolo But just like they do, he takes it nice and slow In fact, whatever he does, I think is grand I’m talkin’ ‘bout Growlin’ Dan Minnie the Moocher, she met my Growlin’ Dan She shook her hootchie-cooch and tried to steal my man She told him of the dream she had of the King of Sweden And how he was givin’ her everythin’ she was needin’ Now my Dan is mean, but he’s on the square So he told old Minnie to take the air He said, “Ho-de-ho-de-ho, ha ha! Minnie, I’ll see you in the sweet by-and-by” When a dog gets mad, he howls When my man gets mad, he growls He says, “What are you doin’? Where you been? Where you goin’? When did you come in? Is my bath ready? Did you turn the water on?” Oh, oh, sometimes I wish I was gone But he handles my affairs and that takes a real good man I’m talkin’ ‘bout Growlin’ Dan Wah, wah, Growlin’ Dan Wah, wah, wah Growlin’ Dan Wah, wah, Growlin’ Dan Wah, wah, talkin’ about my Growlin’ Dan

Why should a fella want a girl like her? A frail and fluffy beauty Why can’t a fellow ever once prefer A solid girl like me? She’s a frothy little bubble With a flimsy kind of air And with very little trouble I could pull out all her hair Oh, oh, why would a fella want a girl like her? A girl who’s so unusual Why can’t a fella ever once prefer A usual girl like me? Her cheeks are a pretty shade of pink But not any pinker than a rose is Her skin may be delicate and soft But not any softer than a doe’s is Her neck is no longer that a swan’s She’s only as dainty as a daisy She’s only as graceful as a bird So why is the fella goin’ crazy? Oh, why would a fella want a girl like her? A girl who’s merely lovely Why can’t a fella ever once prefer A girl who’s merely me? She’s a frothy little bubble With a frilly kind of charm And with very little trouble I could break her little arm Oh, oh, why would a fella want a girl like her? A girl who’s merely lovely Why can’t a fella ever once prefer A girl who’s merely me? What’s the matter with the man? What’s the matter with the man? What’s the matter with the man?

Look at Me 02:44
Look at me Why don’t you look at me The way you look at all the other girls you see? I’m your friend I guess I’ll always be But I’m in love with you Endlessly All the time, all of the time I’ve lost Trying to make you come to me at any cost All I was, all that I’ll ever be, is just a clown for you When you’re blue Blue as the nights I wish we’d spend together What a lovely time together Blue as that glimpse of light When I almost think you might Just look at me All I’ve done, all that I hope to do Is spend my lonely life Loving you

Hey, little girl Comb your hair, fix your makeup Soon he will open the door Don’t think because there’s a ring on your finger You needn’t try anymore For wives should always be lovers too Run to his arms the moment He comes home to you I’m warning you Day after day There are girls at the office And men will always be men Don’t send him off with your hair still in curlers You may not see him again For wives should always be lovers too Run to his arms the moment He comes home to you He’s almost here Hey, little girl Better wear something pretty Something you’d wear to go to the city Dim all the lights Pour the wine, start the music Time to get ready for love Time to get ready for love Time to get ready For love

Left Over 04:27
I wonder if he knows how much I care for him And though I laugh and shake my head His hands on mine are all I know of love I wonder if he even knows my name My name between those lips or on that tongue Would make me lose the ground I’m on To see him smile, the way he smiles when she’s near To get what’s left over, his surplus of love And I know it’s strange, sometimes I wish to hold her near To press her cheek with gratitude saying Thank you for his smile you brought For I am incapable I wonder is he knows how much I care for him and though I laugh and shake my head his hands on mine are all I know of love of love of love

With my high starched collar And my high topped shoes And my hair piled high upon my head I went to lose a jolly hour on the trolley And lost my heart instead With his light brown derby And his bright green tie He was quite the handsomest of men I started to yen So I counted to ten Then I counted to ten again Clang, clang, clang went the trolley Ding, ding, ding went the bell Zing, zing, zing went my heartstrings From the moment I saw him, I fell Chug, chug, chug went the motor Bump, bump, bump went the brakes Thump, thump, thump went my heartstrings When he smiled I could feel the car shake He tipped his hat And took a seat He said he hoped he hadn’t stepped upon my feet He asked my name I held my breath I couldn’t speak because he scared me half to death Buzz, buzz, buzz went the buzzer Plop, plop, plop went the wheels Stop, stop, stop went my heartstrings When he started to go Then I started to know how it feels When the universe reels Buzz, buzz, buzz went the buzzer Plop, plop, plop went the wheels Stop, stop, stop went my heartstrings When he started to leave I took hold of his sleeve With my hand And as if it were planned He stayed on with me And it was grand just to stand With his hand holding mine ‘Til the end of the line

Monday 02:00
Let’s find a spot, here under the stars With nothing but sky between you and I Oh! How the time seems to stop with your face in my hands With such trickery See how it’s flying away And there’s nothing I can do But cling to you, my love And thank the stars I lived a dream with you Oh! How my heart seems to stop when you’re here in my arms With such trickery See how it’s flying away And there’s nothing I can do I lived a dream with you

Papa, Papa, treetop tall Hear your lovin’ mama call You ain’t doin’ too good You ain’t treatin’ me like you should Papa, Papa, hear my plea Stop mistreatin’ me You stay, you stay away That’s why you hear me say What’s the matter now? What’s the matter now? I ain’t seen you, honey Since way last Spring Tell me, pretty Papa Did you break that thing? What’s the matter now? We can’t get along somehow I ain’t had no lovin’ in a long, long, long, long time Tell me, what’s the matter now? Daddy, tell me what’s the matter now? What’s the matter now? What’s the matter now? You never treat me like a lovin’ daddy should Tell me, do you really think I’m made of wood? What’s the matter now? We can’t get along somehow I want some of that honey from that sweet honeycomb Tell me, what’s the matter now? Daddy, tell me what’s the matter now?

Could be Who knows? There’s something due any day I will know right away Soon as it shows It may come cannonballin’ down through the sky Gleam in its eye Bright as a rose Who knows? It’s only just out of reach Down the block, on a beach Under a tree I got a feeling there’s a miracle due Gonna come true Coming to me Could it be? Yes, it could Something’s coming, something good If I can wait Something’s coming I don’t know what it is But it is gonna be great With a click, with a shock Phone will jingle, door will knock Open the latch Something’s coming, don’t know when, but it’s soon Catch the moon, one-handed catch Around the corner Or whistling down the river Come on, deliver to me Will it be? Yes, it will Maybe just by holding still It’ll be there Come on, something, come on in Don’t be shy Meet a gal Pull up a chair The air is humming And something great is coming Who knows? It’s only just out of reach Down the block, on a beach Under a tree It’s only just out of reach Down the block, on a beach Under a tree It’s only just out of reach Down the block, on a beach Maybe tonight Maybe tonight Maybe tonight

Underling 03:39
You of my life I have seen no one more blue in my life And I’ve dreamt the taste of dew on your lips Many nights of my life All my dreams are disaster Underling and her master True, and it’s trite I have fallen into eyes Telling lies And I’ve slept in dingy rooms Taking trips far away from my life All my dreams are disaster Underling and her master I’ve slept so much that I have huddled into nothing but a mass of flesh So soft and numb that I can scarcely tell where body ends and sheets begin If that’s the mattress or my skin, the bin I’m living in I only sing for those I love I only sing for one to love I only sing for one to love me too

about

2016 Grammy Winner for "Best Jazz Vocal Album"

“This music is very personal, very close to home,” Cécile McLorin Salvant responds when asked about the songs on For One to Love. “I’m not playing anyone else here but myself. I can look at many of these songs and see that this is an event that really happened, or a feeling I’ve lived through myself,” McLorin Salvant explains. “That’s what makes it so difficult to share. It’s almost like a diary entry.”

McLorin Salvant is superbly supported in her vision by a world-class group of musicians who share her values and play a key role in shaping each performance into an artistic statement. There are no studio tricks or subterfuge here. When asked her about the secret to her success, McLorin Salvant nonchalantly ascribes much of it to luck. But, then, after a quiet pause, she adds: “People will always be moved by something that’s genuine.” They certainly will and you will encounter just that on every track of this bold, heartfelt album.

That same attention to detail also emerges in a similarly meticulously created, handmade package; a package that Cécile has literally envisioned, drawn or handwritten everything in it. For One to Love is truly the creation of a singular and unique creative. We present to you with Cécile, the second record in her young and amazing career.
